About the Kitchener Citizen
The first edition of the Kitchener Citizen was published in April 2009, but editors Carrie Debrone and Helen Hall aren't new to the community newspaper business in Kitchener.
Carrie Debrone has been publishing a community newspaper in East Kitchener since 1996. Debrone is a graduate of the Ryerson University School of Journalism and spent many years working at the Elmira Independent before branching out into publishing her own community newspaper.
Helen Hall has been publishing a community newspaper in West Kitchener since 2005. She is a graduate of the Journalism-Print program at Conestoga College. She met Carrie while working at the Elmira Independent in the 1980s, and they have remained long-time friends and business partners.
In April 2009, Carrie and Helen changed the name of each of their newspapers to the Kitchener Citizen and increased the combined circulation to 66,000 to reach all residents of Kitchener. And the rest, as they say, is history.
