A four-day carnival at the Sunrise Shopping Centre raised $7,000 for the Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region (WCSWR).
WCSWR runs two shelters in Waterloo Region. Anselma House, which was recently rebuilt at the corner of Ottawa Street North and Heritage Drive, is in Kitchener. The other, Haven House, is located in Cambridge.
WCSWR Chief Executive officer Mary Zilney said the money from this carnival will go toward the project capital for rebuilding of Haven House. The organization is hoping to have a property selected by the end of this summer.
“We are facing some of the same issues in Cambridge as we did in Kitchener (before Anselma House was rebuilt),” Zilney said.
“There is overcrowding and residents are eating dinner in shifts.”
"We'd like to thank the community for their participation and we hope they enjoyed the event," said Steve Voisin of Voisin Developments, the company that owns the Sunrise Shopping Centre.
"The weather was great and the kids had a blast," he said,
adding that the carnival is going to become an annual event.
Zilney said the Voisin family are “amazing supporters” of Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region. Steve's parents, Greg and Marie Voisin made a significant donation to the re-construction of Anselma House, and Greg and his partner Paul Dietrich were members of the building committee.
“I can’t say enough about the Voisins,” Zilney said. “Here they are sharing their expertise once again.”
